Gran Hotel, a modernism jewel

Palma de Mallorca has the privilege of having one of the most beautiful jewels of modernism, the Gran Hotel. The building, built on 1903 was designed by the architect Lluis Domenech Montaner, and has a facade worthy of admiration. If you walk through the Plaza Weyler, you are bound to stop, if only for a moment, and contemplate its rich ornamentation with bars of wrought iron, sculptures, ceramics... If you are imaginative, perhaps you will be surprised thinking what it would be the building like with horsecars by the street and gentlemen in top hats.

The opulence of its outside does not clash at all with the building inside. It was built to house the first luxury hotel dedicated to masses. At the time, its inauguration was a big event. Until the opening of the Hotel Ritz in Madrid in October 1910, it was the most luxurious hotel in Spain. In 1941 the hotel closed its doors becoming the National Insurance Institute. Today, and since 1993, it belongs to Fundació La Caixa and hosts exhibitions, concerts, conferences ...
